My love affair with sour beers is relatively new.
It’s a style of beer I first tasted in Europe, and with the huge increase in availability here in the Bay Area in recent years, my sour beer options have greatly expanded.
This week, I picked the brains of local sour beer enthusiasts to learn more about what makes this class of beers so special, which you can read more about here.Want to try sour beer for yourself? The Bay Area is bursting with plenty of local breweries making their own versions, including:
Russian River Valley Brewing Company (the OG of the local sour beer scene according to Hi Neighbor beverage director Jason Kirmse); San Francisco’s Almanac; Sante Adairius in Capitola; SoMa’s Cellarmaker occasionally dabbles in sours; Shady Oak Barrel House in Sonoma; newly-opened Old Bus Tavern plans to make sour beers at some point; and, of course, Berkeley’s all-sour brewery, The Rare Barrel.
